The Market Place
The Market Place collection is about us and it’s about me; it’s about humanity as a whole and about our - very human - experience through life. It’s about who we really are and the traits that we rarely see or admit we have. The Market Place is where we ‘trade’ ourselves – body and mind. It’s also where we pass judgment and we are judged it’s where we put on masks in hopes of the ‘best trade’. I like to call this work ‘colorfully-dark’ just like life itself.
I have used very bright colors and powerful contrasts. In the first pieces of the collection I’ve give black a special role. Black, not a color, can be defined as the visual impression experienced when no visible light reaches the eye. It means the absence of color – The black background grants power and provides strength to the colors. Just like the absence of life by contrast does the same when life is present.
Market Place one is the start, where it all begins. The sparkling purple - red web of capillary veins are the main focus. They pull us together or they spread us apart. These are the ‘lungs’ of the world and the breath of the universe. This is a talk about an enabler of human life, about the air that passes through our lungs and through the lungs of humanity. So this work is a talk about propagating life, about optimism and beauty but also a talk of struggle and pain. Happy to breath, struggle to breath. There is no face, because there is no need for one - this represents all of us.
Market place two is profoundly disturbing - it has to be. Red dominates the canvas - its burns, it’s hot! It’s bad, is good it not understood, it’s what we love and hate. It’s our expression and desire that becomes uncontrollable and untainted. Throw in just a bit of positive energy - the yellow - to always look on the bright side of our mind and for a hint of royalty – the purple - to complement our fantasies. All contrasted with a few thin, sharp strong black lines. This is our imagination.
The face is cold but the mind is in turmoil. Market place three is the conclusion and its where two worlds collide. Who we are and who we say we are. This is a mind that never rests and will ultimately lead itself to destruction. A mind that constantly swings back and forth between both being full and being hollow and thus it is constantly possessed by a fiery red storm. The molten hot lava however is always hidden by a mask and a bridge appears again, in the form of the optimistic yellow that leads to the cold, calm green - blue undecipherable face. You can never know what the storm is like but you will always assume.
